Human Computer Interaction
Our research work in Human Computer Interaction (HCI) focuses on two main aspects: i) investigating the impact of human cognitive factors in interactive systems with the aim to more inclusively meet the user requirements and to increase the quality of user experience; and ii) the specification, analysis, design and evaluation of user-centric Web interactive systems in an attempt to develop usable and intelligently designed user interfaces and mechanisms that enable personalized user interactions.
Most of our research work has been published in accredited scientific journals and conferences, among others ACM CHI, Elsevier Journal of Systems and Software, Oxford University Press Interacting with Computers, Springer UMAP and INTERACT. Our research work also received the best research paper award at the Springer SouthCHI 2013 conference and the best research paper award nomination at the Springer UMAP 2014 conference.
Main activities of our work include: i) data collection and analysis of user requirements for online services based on the users’ overall context of use (human and technology specific); ii) design of user models that comprehensively characterize users and capture their needs and requirements; iii) application of methodologies and mechanisms that extract intrinsic values of users such as cognitive processing characteristics; iv) planning and conducting usability and observational studies; v) analyzing qualitative and quantitative data of large samples with statistical analysis tools; vi) adoption of user-centered design principles throughout the whole research and development process; vii) utilization of state of the art Web technologies and languages for developing Web-based and mobile systems and applications.
