Panagiotis Germanakos is currently a User Experience Research Expert at SAP SE (since 2013). He is also Co-founder and Deputy Head of the Semantic and Cognitive Research Adaptivity Technologies (SCRAT) Research Group of the Department of Computer Science, University of Cyprus (since 2003) and Research Scientist in the Laboratory of New Technologies of the Faculty of Communication & Media Studies, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens (since 2004). He was an ERCIM Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Web Applications for the Future Internet Research Group in IIT-CNR (2011-2012) and an Assistant Professor at the Department of Management and MIS, University of Nicosia (2008-2013). He obtained his PhD in “Web Personalization, Communication Environments: Incorporating Cognitive and Emotional Human Factors” from the University of Athens in 2008 and his MSc in International Marketing Management from the Leeds University Business School in 1999. His B.Sc. was in Computer Science (1998) and also holds a HND Diploma of Technician Engineer in the field of Computer Studies (1996). His research interest is in Human-Computer Interaction, Adaptive Cognitive Systems, Web Personalization - bringing the ‘human-in-the-loop’, User Modeling - encompassing amongst others visual, cognitive and emotional processes, Computational Intelligence.
He has over than 100 publications in accredited scientific books, journals and conferences, such as Elsevier Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Elsevier Computers in Human Behavior Journal, IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, OUP Interacting with Computers, Oxford Computer Journal, Elsevier Journal of Systems and Software, ACM CHI, Springer UMAP, IFIP INTERACT, and IEEE Web Intelligence. He has co-authored a monograph with title “Human-centred Web Adaptation and Personalization - From Theory to Practice” (released March 2016), and co-edited three other books namely, "Cognitive and Emotional Processes in Web-based Education: Integrating Human Factors and Personalization" (released May 2009), "Mass Customization for Personalized Communication Environments: Integrating Human Factors" (released September 2009) and "Intelligent User Interfaces: Adaptation and Personalization Systems and Technologies" (released September 2008) respectively. His work has obtained a number of awards including a best paper award at the SouthCHI 2013 conference, a best student paper award at the AH 2008, two best paper award nominations at the UMAP 2014 and ICE-B 2012 conferences respectively, and one best poster award nomination at ICALT 2007 conference.
Panagiotis is a member of various international research networks and professional bodies like ACM, AIS, he was Vice President of the Special Interest Groups of the Local Chapter of the AIS in Cyprus (CY-CAIS), Local Chapter of the ACM SIGCHI in Cyprus, Expert Network of HCI-KDD (Human-Computer Interaction and Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining), and Kaleidoscope European research network (shaping the scientific evolution of Technology Enhanced Learning). His has been participating during the years in numerous editorial, program and evaluation committees and he has been co-organizing (serving from various positions) international events, such as HAAPIE 2016 (in conjunction with ACM UMAP 2016), ACM/IEEE SouthCHI 2013, MCIS 2011 and 2010.
He has a long term participation in research projects funded from national and international bodies, including the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) and the European Union. Specifically, he has been participating in a number of national funded projects related to intelligent user interfaces, personalized services and interactions, adaptive applications and systems, human-centred and context-aware mechanisms and methods, mobile and wireless sensor networks, as the principal researcher and/or coordinator, such as PersonaWeb, smarTag, EKPAIDEION, AdaptiveWeb, and he has contributed and/or lead the activities of the Cyprus participation in IST projects like: CONET, GENESIS, MPOWER, EPRI-start, INTELCITIES, BEEP, PRISMA.
Panagiotis has also an extensive expertise in the provision of consultancy for large-scaled IT solutions and implementations in the business sector. His main concern is to help and support organizations and teams to design and build simplified, qualitative and usable user interfaces, interactions, functionalities and components for their products, applications and services based on the UCD process, flexible models and methods, and best-of-breed UX tools and guidelines that will enable them to excel, sustaining the competitive advantage in their market.
